Since then I can't remember any other game that represented such a big leap in graphics, they've been mostly incremental improvements.Īlso physics have been lacking recently. Doom 3 in 2004 which introduced real-time lighting and shadows and Crysis in 2007 which took it several steps forwards in refinement. Taking a step back for me at least there were two graphics milestones in the 2000's. It would also be a mart move financially since Crytek is hurting and they seem lacking in new IP that sells. Warhead did more with this but decided to kinda rush the player in those levels. That was a pity since it was very interesting. In Crysis 1 for instance you spend very little time on the island after everything gets 'frosty'. In any case it's a shame Crysis 2 and 3 went into another direction with the bipedal Ceph and the limited urban environments.Ĭrytek should consider re-making Crysis 1 and Warhead in the direction of also lengthening or adding some new levels. They still look good, performance indeed isn't that great but it never was, some later optimizations that made it into CryEngine 3 were never backported and both games were perfect examples of the issues DirectX 10 had at the time - lower performance for very little visual benefit over DirectX 9. I didn't use mods, just a few tweaks here and there to get a little bit more out of it mostly in draw distances. I re-played Crysis 1 and Warhead last year.
